Ed Hiscoe, Hanshi, is the owner and chief instructor of the Hiscoe School of Jiu-Jitsu. He holds the rank of KUDAN, 9th degree jiu-jitsu Black Belt. He is the head of the Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu system. This responsibility was handed on to him after the founder, Professor Georges Sylvain, 10th Dan (retired). On February 15, 2011, Ed Hiscoe was also awarded the title of HANSHI by the senior Black Belts in the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Union.
Widely acknowledged for his comprehensive knowledge of self-protection, on March 27, 1999 Hiscoe Hanshi was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame as the Master Jiu-Jitsu Instructor of the Year. He also is among a select few in Canada who have earned a full Teacher’s License for the Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu system.
Hiscoe Hanshi started his Jiu-Jitsu career in the mid-70s with his two sons, James and Steve, when they were five and six years old. James Hiscoe sensei holds the rank of 4th Degree Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. Steve Hiscoe, Shihan, holds the rank of 8th Degree Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and operates a highly successful Jiu-Jitsu Dojo in Chilliwack British Columbia.
While Professor Georges Sylvain, 10th degree black belt and founder of the Canadian System of Jiu-Jitsu know as Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu, was still active in the martial arts community, Hiscoe Hanshi worked with him extensively. Together they produced instructional videos including, The Persuader Key Holder Self-Defense System, Police Pressure Point Techniques and The Use and Application of Pepper Spray Against Dogs.
Hiscoe Hanshi continues to conduct these special Black Belt classes under the Black Belt College in which participants may earn an official teaching license and be graded accordingly to higher black belt dan ranks. Hiscoe Hanshi confers with affiliated Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Union Dojo owners across Canada on a regular basis to ensure the Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu System is maintained in the highest caliber.
